Chow Fan-fu to give talks on Shostakovich's symphonies

     As this year marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Shostakovich, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present the lecture series "Symphonic Giants of the 20th Century - Shostakovich and his Symphonies" from August to October.

     The lectures will be given by acclaimed music critic Chow Fan-fu. Chow will introduce the audience to the world of Shostakovich's symphonies in a progressive way by focusing on three of the composer's iconic works: "Symphony No. 5", "Symphony No. 7" and "Symphony No. 11".

     Chow Fan-fu is an arts critic who has been hosting a variety of classical music and cultural programmes on Radio Television Hong Kong's Radio 4 since 1982. He is currently Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Chapter of the International Association of Theatre Critics and an examiner for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In 2011, he was awarded a Medal of Honour by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government for his continued and tireless efforts in the promotion of classical music and the appreciation of the arts. Publications authored by him include "Music Is Life", which was nominated for "Ten Best Books of 2006", and "Music with Love: The 30th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra", which was listed as one of the "Ten Best Books of 2005".

     All lectures will be conducted in Cantonese and will start at 7.30pm in the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum. Tickets priced at $50 (for each lecture) are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis).
