Percussionist Chau Chin-tung to give concert in August

     Local musician Chau Chin-tung will give a percussion concert in August.

     The concert will be held at 8pm on August 4 (Tuesday) at the Theatre of Sheung Wan Civic Centre. The programme will feature an eclectic mix of Eastern and Western percussion works, including "The Doomsday Machine", "Ma mère l'Oye" and "The Crested Myna Washing", as well as Chau's original compositions "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "Touch Wood" and three premiere works: "Chase", "The Bustling Fairy Sedan" and "Bang!".

     Also performing in the concert will be Mandy Lo, Rieko Koyama, Louis Siu, Raymond Vong, Jason Leung, Chan Wai-hong, Tse Tsz-chung and Mo Chun-pang (percussion); Kwan Sheung-fung (cor anglais); Law Hang-leung and Wu Chun-hei (suona); Lin Yu-hsien (dizi); Lu Yi and Li Li-chin (sheng); and the Refiner Drums.

     Chau graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he studied Chinese percussion under Ho Man-chuen and Yim Hok-man, and Western percussion under Lung Heung-wing and Shaun Tilburg.

     In 1999, Chau was commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival in the creation of "Boombastic Verses". In 2002, he performed in "The Music of the Dragons Concert" in celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. He has performed in Tan Dun's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" concert and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra's "Majestic Drums" series (2004 to 2007 and 2012). He has also performed at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta's South America tour in 2010. Chau is currently Principal Percussion of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

     The percussion concert by Chau Chin-tung is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). Tickets priced at $120 and $180 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis).
