*************************************************

The Thematic Household Survey Report No. 55 is published by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) today (June 17).

This publication contains findings of the Thematic Household Survey conducted during September to December 2013, which collected information relating to characteristics of Hong Kong residents having short stay in the mainland of China (the Mainland).

Based on findings of the survey, it was estimated that some 3 849 100 Hong Kong residents aged 15 and over had travelled to the Mainland for the cumulative (not necessarily consecutive) number of nights of 30 and below during the 12 months before enumeration, constituting 65.5% of all Hong Kong residents aged 15 and over.

The major purpose of their travelling to the Mainland was "travelling/sightseeing/shopping/leisure" (50.5%), followed by "visiting spouse/children/relatives/friends" (36.5%) and "working (including taking up employment and business trips)/running business" (7.8%).

Based on the number of times of travel, the majority (90.2%) most frequently visited the cities in Guangdong Province, with 43.4% visited Shenzhen, 15.6% visited Guangzhou and 8.7% visited Dongguan. Another 9.8% usually visited places outside Guangdong Province.

During the 12 months before enumeration, it was estimated that some 257 100 Hong Kong residents aged 15 and over had travelled to Guangdong Province for the cumulative number of nights of 31 to 90, constituting 4.4% of all Hong Kong residents aged 15 and over.

The major purpose of their travelling to Guangdong Province was "visiting spouse/children/relatives/friends" (49.5%), followed by "working (including taking up employment and business trips)/running business" (26.9%) and "travelling/sightseeing/shopping/leisure" (14.9%).

Based on the number of times of travel, about two-fifth (42.0%) most frequently visited Shenzhen. Another 18.3% usually visited Guangzhou and 11.5% visited Dongguan.

Detailed findings of the survey, together with concepts/definitions of key terms and data limitations, are presented in the publication.
