The following is issued on behalf of the Environmental Campaign Committee:

The Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) held the World Environment Day (WED) 2015 publicity event at Plaza Hollywood in Diamond Hill this afternoon (June 5) to promote the messages of clean recycling to the public.

Officiating at the event were the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing; the Chairman of the ECC, Mr Lam Chiu-ying; the Permanent Secretary for the Environment/Director of Environmental Protection, Ms Anissa Wong; and representatives of supporting organisations, namely the Hong Kong Housing Authority, the Hong Kong Housing Society and the Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies Limited.

Addressing the event, Mr Wong said that the Government will step up waste reduction efforts by implementation of a comprehensive system of waste reduction, recycling and treatment. He encouraged members of the public to remember the three key points of clean recycling, namely keeping recyclables clean, keeping composite materials out of recycling bins and keeping leftovers and used tissue paper away from three-colour recycling bins, in order to integrate clean recycling practices into daily life.

Also at today's event, young artist Kenny Lau shared his design concept for new waste separation bins. Noting that he gives full support to clean recycling, he called on every member of the public to follow suit.

In addition, a drama performance featuring clean recycling was staged at the event. Through short stories and interaction between the audience and the campaign mascot Big Waster, the drama promoted the importance of waste separation and clean recycling in an interesting way.

The ECC, the MTR Corporation and the Education Bureau jointly organise the ECC MTR Environmental Award for Schools every year to nurture a sense of care and responsibility for the environment among students, as well as to encourage their creativity in environmental protection. This year, inter-school e-card design and photography competitions were organised under the theme of "Clean Recycling for Green Hong Kong". Awards were presented at the event to winners of the two competitions as well as the Old Song New Lyrics Competition. Winning entries were also showcased at the event venue.

Also launched at today's event was the WED 2015 thematic roving exhibition, which features information panels and game booths to promote the proper ways of clean recycling. The exhibition will run from June to August. The ECC's Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors will introduce WED and the clean recycling messages at some exhibition venues. The exhibitions are scheduled as follows:

The ECC holds promotion events for WED every year and organises environmental programmes, including the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence, the Hong Kong Green School Awards and the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme.
