Observatory launches new Announcements in the Public Interest on thunderstorms and tropical cyclone swells
*****************************************************

The Hong Kong Observatory launched two new TV and radio Announcements in the Public Interest (APIs) on the threats of thunderstorms and tropical cyclone swells today (May 15) to raise public awareness of preventing disaster arising from inclement weather.

Both TV APIs adopt a combination of animation and real scene filming in their production. The API on thunderstorms introduces three possible threats caused by thunderstorms, namely lightning, squalls and hail. Members of the public should stay tuned to the Observatory for thunderstorm warnings and related information, including the areas being affected, when engaging in outdoor activities and should take appropriate precautions.

The API on swells illustrates the danger of swells caused by tropical cyclones, which can easily be overlooked. Swells can develop into huge waves when approaching the coast. The public should stay tuned to the Observatory's forecast and warning messages on swells. Keep away from the shore and stop all water activities if necessary.

The two new TV APIs are now available at the Observatory webpage and can be viewed at the following links: youtu.be/4zawtw7GQdM and youtu.be/8NJUHduPnhE .
