The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, today (May 7) said that the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will organise a series of activities to commemorate the 70th anniversary of victory in the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression and World War II.

The Consul General of the Russian Federation in the HKSAR, Mr Vladimir A Kalinin, held a cocktail reception this evening to commemorate the 70th anniversary of victory in Russia's patriotic war and World War II. Mr Tsang was invited to attend and give a speech at the reception.

Mr Tsang said Hong Kong played a role in the eight-year war of resistance as well as the Pacific War. Fellow citizens in older generations remember the suffering during the three years and eight months of Japanese occupation. Ceremonies are held in Hong Kong every year to pay tribute to the numerous countrymen and soldiers who died in the war.

He also said that various activities will be organised by the HKSAR Government this year to commemorate the 70th anniversary of victory in the war of resistance, including official commemoration, exhibitions, talks, seminars, film shows, book displays and visits to remains. The "Fighting as One: Reminders of the Eight-year War of Resistance in Guangdong and Hong Kong" exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence will be the first to open this month as a prelude to the upcoming activities. The Government also encourages community organisations and local groups to hold commemorative activities to enable extensive public participation, thereby enhancing remembrance of history.
