Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band Annual Concert to perform favourite selections
*********************************************************

The Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band (HKYSB) of the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will perform its annual concert in May. The concert will feature the world premiere of guest conductor Professor Chan Wing-wah's composition "Sonic Movement", which also gives its name to the concert's title. The band will also play an array of other works for a wonderful music-filled evening.

The concert will be held at 7.30pm on May 25 (Monday) in the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall. Under the batons of Pak Wing-heng and Lee Sing-wan, instructors of the Music Office, the band will perform various pieces including Balmages' "Arabian Dances"; Tanaka's "Methuselah II" written for percussion and wind band; Maslanka's "Give Us This Day, 2nd movement" inspired by Buddhism; and "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" arranged by Reed, regarded as the most magnificent and varied of the seven movements in the suite "The Planets".

In addition, guest performers the Hong Kong Oratorio Society and the Ponte Singers, together with the HKYSB, will perform Gjeilo's "Meridian" and selections from Orff's "Carmina Burana" arranged by Quiles. The renowned percussionist Dr Lin Wei-chen will be the marimba soloist for Abe's "Prism Rhapsody", while four other percussion soloists, namely Choy Lap-tak, Choi Suk-fan, Carmen Au and Hanson Tsang, will perform Gillingham's "Concertino".

The HKYSB was formed in 1978 with the aim of nurturing young musicians and arousing greater interest in symphonic band music in Hong Kong. The band currently has 80 members aged 12 to 25 and recruits annually by open audition. It has performed with distinguished guest musicians and bands in Hong Kong and overseas, winning much acclaim.
