1 500 native seedlings planted at Islands District Tree Planting Festival (with photos)

     The following is issued on behalf of the Islands District Council:

     To enhance the ecological environment and promote public awareness of nature conservation, around 300 Islands District residents, teachers, students and volunteers planted 1 500 native seedlings today (April 25) in the "Islands District Healthy City Tree Planting Festival - Green Lantau 2015" activity, co-hosted by the Islands District Council (IDC) and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), at Nei Lak Shan on Lantau Island.

     Participants hiked from Ngong Ping Village to the planting site at Nei Lak Shan in Lantau North Country Park. The afforested land of about 1 200 square metres will conjoin the nearby groves to increase the area of forested habitat and better enhance the ecological environment. Participants were offered free cable car rides by Ngong Ping 360 Limited to travel between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping Village where they could enjoy the picturesque scenery of Lantau Island.

     The Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Ms Anissa Wong; the Chairman of the IDC, Mr Chow Yuk-tong; the District Officer (Islands), Mr Anthony Li; the Senior Country Parks Officer of the AFCD, Mr Patrick Lai; the Head of Corporate Affairs of Ngong Ping 360 Limited, Ms Vicky Lau; the Chairman of the Conservancy Association, Ms Lucy Woo and representatives from Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Hong Kong International Airport, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, Hongkong Electric Company, Limited and Sino Group officiated at the event and took part in planting the seedlings.

     The Tree Planting Festival is organised by the Islands Healthy City Working Group under the Tourism, Agriculture, Fisheries and Environmental Hygiene Committee of the IDC. In the past five years, a total of 22 000 native seedlings had been planted. The activity is aimed at enhancing the ecological environment and biodiversity of Lantau Island, promoting public awareness of nature conservation and encouraging people to take part in greening and environmental conservation work.

     The event is co-organised by the Islands District Office, Ngong Ping 360 Limited and the Conservancy Association, and sponsored by Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Hong Kong International Airport, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, Hongkong Electric Company, Limited and Sino Group.
