Contractor fined in review hearing for lift incident at King's Tower on King's Road in North Point
********************************************************

In regard to the lift incident at King's Tower, 480 King's Road, North Point, on March 2, 2013, Shineford Engineering Limited, the lift contractor, was convicted at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts in the review hearing today (April 14) of two charges of not carrying out maintenance work on the suspension ropes and traction sheave properly and safely. It was fined $50,000 in total.

Shineford Engineering Limited and one of its directors were convicted on December 19 last year of two charges of subcontracting out the lift works to a person who was not a registered lift contractor. They were fined $4,000 in total. For two charges of not carrying out maintenance work on the suspension ropes and traction sheave properly and safely, for which the accused were found not guilty, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) filed an application for a review after consulting the Department of Justice.

The EMSD welcomes the verdict and will continue to enforce the law strictly to ensure safe and reliable lift services for the public.

On March 2, 2013, lift No. 5 at King's Tower was carrying seven passengers when the incident happened. It dropped to the bottom of the lift shaft when the lift car ascended from the ground floor to the first floor, causing injuries to all the passengers.

The EMSD cancelled the registration of Shineford Engineering Limited as a registered lift contractor and registered escalator contractor on October 16, 2013. The lift engineer concerned was sentenced to five months' imprisonment on March 5 and removed from the Register of Lift Engineers on September 19 last year.
