*************************************************

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (April 13) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr Rayson Huang, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and extended his deepest condolences to Dr Huang's family.

"Dr Huang was a distinguished scientist and had devoted his life to education and service to Hong Kong. As Vice-Chancellor of HKU from 1972 to 1986, he successfully led the university through the first phase of transformation and expansion of higher education in Hong Kong, during which the student population in the university doubled. He also masterminded the first major campus extension project of HKU since the Second World War, thus laying a solid foundation for the continued growth and advancement of this world-class university in the decades to come," Mr Ng said.

Apart from serving as Vice-Chancellor of HKU, Dr Huang also contributed tremendously to Hong Kong in other capacities, including as the Vice-Chairman of the Basic Law Consultative Committee and a member of the Legislative Council.

"A man of wisdom and virtue, Dr Huang was the true embodiment of the spirit of HKU. I am confident that his vision will live on, and that generations of the HKU family will continue to be inspired by his passion for nurturing the best talent for Hong Kong," Mr Ng added.
