Daily flight movements hit new record
*************************************

A total of 1 210 flight movements were handled at the Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (April 3), setting a new single-day record, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) said today (April 4).

The number of flight movements surpassed the previous single-day record of 1 179 flight movements set on February 14 and exceeded the daily average of 1 071 movements recorded in 2014 by 13 per cent. Moreover, 687 flight movements also operated through the Hong Kong Flight Information Region yesterday, making up a total of 1 897 flights handled by the CAD within the 24-hour period.

The increase in flight movements was attributed to the high demand during the Easter holiday period. The extra flights were mostly operated to destinations in Taiwan, Thailand, Japan and Korea. Taipei was the most popular destination followed by Bangkok, Seoul and Osaka.

In 2014, over 391 000 aircraft movements were handled at the Hong Kong International Airport and more than 232 000 aircraft movements operated through the Hong Kong Flight Information Region. They represented respective increases of 5 per cent and 6 per cent compared with 2013.

"The CAD's Air Traffic Management Division has deployed additional staff to cater for the seasonal demand and is always committed to ensuring safe and efficient air traffic service to the travelling public," the spokesman said.
