Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Sharing Lectures by Hong Kong Composers 2015" will be held in April and May. The Hong Kong Composers' Guild has invited six renowned local composers to share their experiences and views on music composition in the lectures.
Details of the lectures are as follows:
April 15 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Creativity Within and Without the Boundaries of the Musical Traditions" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker: Clarence Mak
Clarence Mak is currently the Head of the Department of Composition and Electronic Music at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He composes music for local and overseas ensemble groups. His compositions have been featured in concerts, music festivals, academic symposiums and international conferences.
Demonstrators: Wyman Wat (flute) and a member of the Professional Zheng Ensemble (zheng)
April 22 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Composition: Crossing over Genres" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker and piano performer: Lam Man-yee
Lam Man-yee, a renowned composer, obtained her bachelor degree from the University of Hong Kong in psychology and sociology. She then studied piano in the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, Italy, and composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. In 1989 she was awarded Composer of the Year by the Hong Kong Artists' Guild.
April 29 (Wednesday)
Topic: "Exploring a New Musical Language" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker: Dr Mui Kwong-chiu
Dr Mui Kwong-chiu is a well-known composer in Hong Kong and his cross-media works, Chinese orchestral pieces and harmonica and choral works have won critical acclaim. Dr Mui has composed and arranged many commissioned works for local and overseas arts groups as well as music festivals and other events, including the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay Ceremony, the 2009 East Asian Games Closing Ceremony and the Opening Ceremony of Hong Kong Week at the 2010 Shanghai Expo (for which he was also appointed as music director).

May 6 (Wednesday)
Topic: "My Music in the Context of Multimedia Creativity" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker: Dr Chan Ming-chi
Dr Chan Ming-chi studied music composition in the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and the Elisabeth University of Music, and finished his post-doctoral programme at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He has been an associate professor at the Tainan University of the Arts and a professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. His works are often performed in festivals of contemporary music globally.

May 13 (Wednesday)
Topic: "The Writing of Christian Songs: A Sharing of Experience and Music Making" (conducted in Cantonese)
Speaker: Joseph Lai
Joseph Lai is a Member of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Composers' Guild. He was admitted to the Department of Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and studied composition with Professor David Gwilt. His musical compositions mainly include hymns, anthems, liturgical music, organ and piano music and orchestral music.

May 20 (Wednesday)
Topic: "My Sixty Years of Composing Life" (conducted in English)
Speaker and piano performer: Professor David Gwilt
Professor David Gwilt is a key figure in Hong Kong's classical music world. Apart from performing and composing, he also writes music criticism, presents radio programmes, conducts concerts and has taught for 25 years at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In the United Kingdom, he played the viola with various orchestras and ensembles, accompanied many famous artists on the piano, and appeared in numerous concerts broadcast by the BBC.
All lectures will be held at 7.30pm at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum. Tickets priced at $50 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis).
