Women's Commission celebrates International Women's Day
*******************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Women's Commission:

The Women's Commission (WoC) hosted a cocktail reception today (March 8) to celebrate International Women's Day 2015 with women's groups and various stakeholders in the community.

Speaking at the reception, the Chairperson of the WoC, Mrs Stella Lau, said that as the high-level central mechanism to promote the rights and interests of women in Hong Kong, the WoC has been very concerned about women's role in the social and economic development of Hong Kong, with a view to enabling women to realise their potential. The Commission has also assumed an important role in tendering advice to the Government on issues concerning women during the course of policy formulation.

"The Commission is glad to learn that the Chief Executive has accepted our two recommendations on gender mainstreaming and women's appointment to government advisory and statutory bodies in this year's Policy Address. These initiatives are very crucial for promoting the development of women as well as their participation in public services, with an aim of achieving gender equality," Mrs Lau said.

Mrs Lau said that along the direction of the Policy Address, the WoC would continue to make "Women's Employment" the focus of this year's work. The Commission's Funding Scheme for Women's Development also keeps on taking "Women's Employment" as its theme this year, in the hope that through the joint efforts of the women's groups and non-governmental organisations, various types of activities could be organised to help unleash women's potential and create an environment conducive to their employment.

"Besides, the Commission and the Labour and Welfare Bureau launched in October last year a dedicated one-stop information platform for women who wish to join the workforce and women already in employment, namely the 'Women Employment Website' (www.womenemployment.gov.hk)," she added.

Before officiating at the reception, the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, toured the WoC's exhibition at the venue. The exhibition showcases the major works of the WoC in the previous year, which includes the promotion of gender mainstreaming with the Government, the enhancement of women's participation in government advisory and statutory bodies, the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women with the Government, as well as the launch of the Women Employment Website.

Also officiating at the reception were Deputy Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Madame Tong Xiaoling; the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung; the Permanent Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Miss Annie Tam; and the Deputy Director-General of the Coordination Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Ms Liao Xun.
