EPD to open Shatin Transfer Station and reduce fee at two Refuse Transfer Stations on HK Island
**********************************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) will open the Shatin Transfer Station (STTS) for use by private waste collectors and reduce the fee at the Island East and Island West Transfer Stations on March 1, with a view to encouraging the trade to use the refuse transfer system.

An EPD spokesman said today (February 27) that the EPD is implementing waste diversion measures to facilitate the designation of the South East New Territories Landfill in Tseung Kwan O to receive only construction waste by the end of this year. By then, private waste collectors from districts including Sha Tin, Tai Po and Sai Kung will no longer be able to deliver domestic, commercial and industrial waste to the said landfill for disposal.

To enable proper and convenient disposal of waste collected from these districts, the EPD will open the STTS for use by private waste collectors at a service fee of $30 per tonne of waste. Waste collectors must first apply for an account under the Refuse Transfer Service Scheme before using the station for waste disposal, while existing registered account holders need not apply again.

Moreover, the charge for the refuse transfer service at the Island East Transfer Station (IETS) and the Island West Transfer Station (IWTS) will be reduced from $40 to $30 per tonne of waste, with a view to encouraging waste collectors operating on Hong Kong Island to use nearby refuse transfer services and avoid cross-district delivery of waste. After the fee adjustment, the charge for the refuse transfer services at the IETS, the IWTS, the West Kowloon Transfer Station and the STTS will be aligned at the same level.

For enquiries on the above arrangements or registration matters, please call the EPD at 2872 1704 during office hours or email rts@epd.gov.hk. Details are also available at www.epd.gov.hk.
