About 300 fire and ambulance professionals from 13 countries and regions are taking part in the Fire Asia 2015 international conference now being held in Hong Kong.

Officiating this morning (February 4) at the opening ceremony of the three-day conference were the Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok, and the Director of Fire Services, Mr Lai Man-hin.

Mr Lai Man-hin said the conference would facilitate the exchange of the latest developments and best practices in the provision of emergency services and fire safety engineering among professionals with different areas of expertise.

"The theme of Fire Asia 2015 is 'Team Up for Future'. Teamwork is indeed essential for the Fire Services Department (FSD) to fulfil our mission of protecting lives. Our effective response in handling various emergency incidents is only possible with close collaboration among our members of different disciplines," he said.

Mr Lai Man-hin said the FSD's vision of making Hong Kong a safe city also relies on teaming up with various external professionals.

"Through forging close partnerships with our counterparts outside Hong Kong, we can keep up with the latest strategies in firefighting and rescue, brigade management and the provision of emergency services," he said.

"By engaging our stakeholders among building professionals, engineers and academia locally, we are able to offer creative fire engineering solutions to address fire safety issues with the benefit of technological advancement to better meet the needs of our rapidly developing city.

"Similarly, our collaboration with medical experts in Hong Kong enables us to keep abreast of the latest paramedic science and protocols so that we can maintain and enhance our pre-hospital emergency care."

Mr Lai Man-hin said Fire Asia 2015 provides a valuable platform for participants to exchange views and experience in their respective fields, and to achieve synergy in pursuing the common goal of enhancing public safety.

The first Fire Asia international conference was held in Hong Kong in 1987. The event serves as a unique platform for exchange of professional knowledge among emergency service professionals, fire engineers, consultants, architects and designers of fire safety systems.

Fire Asia 2015, jointly organised by the Institution of Fire Engineers (Hong Kong Branch), the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Building Services Division and Fire Division), the Ambulance Service Institute (Hong Kong Branch) and the China Hong Kong Fire Protection Association, is also supported by the FSD.¡@
