HK SciFest 2015 opens today offering wide range of science activities (with photos)

     The large-scale science programme HK SciFest 2015 opened today (February 1) at the Hong Kong Science Museum. Organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum in collaboration with 26 local tertiary education institutes, science and education associations, museums and government departments, the festival offers a wide range of science exploration activities for the public explore the fun of science. The event runs until mid-April.

     Speaking at today's opening ceremony at the Hong Kong Science Museum, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li, said this year six tertiary education institutes and other organisations have been invited. The provision of diverse activities has increased from 40 to more than 70.

     Ms Li noted that the content of this year's HK SciFest is suitable for all ages and includes trips to local infrastructures such as an MTR depot, a power station and sewage treatment facilities. Visitors can also learn about Hong Kong's natural environment through different activities like stargazing. The event offers activities for everyone to explore science in their daily lives.

     Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony included the Dean of Science, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and member of the Science Museum Advisory Panel, Professor Nancy Ip, the Museum Director of the Hong Kong Science Museum, Ms Karen Sit, and representatives of the programme partners.

     Wide-ranging in content, HK SciFest 2015 offers activities including exhibitions, family days, fun experiment classes, science competitions, science film shows, workshops, field visits, guided tours, science drama and theatre. Science lectures are also available covering popular topics including life sciences, chemistry, physics, engineering, astronomy and environmental conservation. Among these activities, Science Alive 2015 will be held from March 7 to 20 at the Hong Kong Science Museum under the theme "Chemistry - why does it matter?". Distinguished academics from the United Kingdom will present interactive lectures and workshops. In addition, Family Days will be held on March 7 and 8 and March 14 and 15 at the lower piazza of the Hong Kong Science Museum with booth activities, allowing families to explore the fun of science together.
