Hong Kong Velodrome and related facilities to reopen
****************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) announced today (January 30) that enhancement works on the surface of the cycling track at the Hong Kong Velodrome (HKV) have been completed and the International Cycling Union (Union Cycliste Internationale, UCI) has also finished an on-site inspection of the HKV. The arena will reopen on February 2 (Monday) and bookings will start from 7am on February 1 (Sunday).

The Head Coach of the Hong Kong Cycling Team (the HK Team), Mr Shen Jinkang, and HK Team members found the quality of the enhanced cycling track very satisfactory after inspecting and trying out the track recently. Mr Shen expressed his gratitude to the Administration for conducting the enhancement works for the track, which was of paramount importance in meeting the needs of the HK Team's high quality training.

"The HKV is a world-class facility of the highest standard. The cycling track, after the enhancement works, further meets the stringent training needs of the Hong Kong Team, leading the HKV to scale new heights. The HKV is a first-class professional venue in the world, and the cycling track, no matter its gradient or smoothness, is up to the highest level," Mr Shen said.

As the first indoor cycling facility in Hong Kong to meet the standards of the UCI, the HKV's core mission is to provide a local, fixed and quality training base for the HK Team. It also marks Hong Kong's achievement in building a venue which is well suited to hosting large-scale and high-level track-cycling competitions. The entire venue (including the timber cycling track) was inspected and accepted by government professionals upon completion in 2013, and has been verified by the UCI on-site along with the relevant homologation. The track has operated smoothly since it was officially opened in April 2014. Two international competitions were successfully held at the venue in October and November 2014 respectively. The HK Team and international professional athletes have recognised that the track is up to international standard.

To strive for continuous improvement and to fulfil the HK Team's stringent training needs, the LCSD has all along gauged the opinions of the HK Team on the venue and the cycling track since the HKV's opening. Having regard to the HK Team's on-site experience of training and competitions, the LCSD decided to further improve some facilities and conduct extra enhancement works on the surface of the track from late November last year.
