The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, attended the official opening of Tung Chung Job Centre today (January 26). Tung Chung Job Centre is the the Labour Department's 13th job centre. Also attending the opening ceremony were the Permanent Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Miss Annie Tam, and the Commissioner for Labour, Mr Donald Tong.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Cheung said to strengthen the employment support services for residents on Lantau Island the Labour Department started the planning of a new job centre in Tung Chung in 2013. The operation of Tung Chung Job Centre has been smooth since it first opened on October 20, 2014. So far the centre has received about 6 100 job-seekers who came for the job search and employment facilities provided, with an average of about 100 visitors per day. In addition, the centre has already organised seven district job fairs, offering about 860 vacancies to job-seekers.
Mr Cheung noted that Tung Chung Job Centre has been proactive in strengthening co-operation with different organisations to echo the expectations of the local community. These include having meetings with residents' organisations well before the operation of the centre started to understand the needs of job-seekers in the district. The centre has also established contacts with non-government organisations serving people with special needs in the district with a view to stepping up co-operation in the provision of employment support services for job-seekers in the district.
In addition, Tung Chung Job Centre has also been in close contact with employers in the district including Lantau Development Alliance (LaDA) and organisations on the airport island, to identify more suitable vacancies for job-seekers.
"The operation of this new centre is still at a preliminary stage. We will monitor its operation closely and continue to enhance publicity through different groups and organisations in the district. At the same time, we will also organise more recruitment activities," Mr Cheung said.
Tung Chung Job Centre is located at Unit 211A, 2/F, Yat Tung Shopping Centre, Yat Tung Estate, Tung Chung, Lantau Island. It provides a comprehensive range of employment services for both employers and job-seekers. The centre opens from Mondays to Fridays between 9am and 5.30pm and Saturdays between 9am and noon.
