The large-scale exhibition "Treasures from Tsarskoye Selo, Residence of the Russian Monarchs" now being held at the Hong Kong Museum of History has been well received by the public. A mix of educational and entertaining activities is being held throughout the exhibition period for visitors of all ages to enrich their experience in learning about the history and culture of Russia.
One of the highlights is the storytelling tour co-organised by the museum and Ground and Round Theatre. Visitors can take a closer look at the imperial life of the Russian monarchy in Tsarskoye Selo in a lively manner. The programme will be held on February 8 and 22 and March 1 and 15 at 11am.
Music lovers should not miss the final session of the Russian Spectacular Series performed by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at the exhibition venue on February 8 at 3pm.
Visitors who love making handicrafts are welcome to join the "3D Puzzle-making of Ancient Architecture in Russia" workshop. They can not only test their craft skills, but also get to know the unique features of Russian architecture. The workshop will be held on February 25 and March 11 at 3pm.
To help children understand the content of the exhibition, parents are encouraged to join the "Folktales of Matryoshka Doll" educational workshop with their kids on March 1 and 8 at 3pm. Through storytelling and discussion, both parents and children will be able to learn more about the history and culture of Russia.
Model-touching and model-making workshops have also been tailor-made for visitors with disabilities to make their visits more enjoyable. In addition, a series of public lectures focusing on the history, diplomacy and religion of Russia will be held for those seeking a more in-depth understanding of Russian culture.
To tie in with the exhibition, the museum has produced two publications - a fully illustrated exhibition catalogue and a pop-up picture book. The pop-up picture book is the first children's publication made by the museum, and it has rich graphics, easy-to-read text and interactive elements to introduce the history of Tsarskoye Selo and Russia to children in an interesting and vivid manner. The publications are available for sale at the museum.
The exhibition "Treasures from Tsarskoye Selo, Residence of the Russian Monarchs", which will end on March 16, is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve of Russia, with the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve of Russia as co-organisers. Solely sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, it is one of the exhibitions in the 2014 Hong Kong Jockey Club Series. The highlight exhibit is a richly decorated carriage with harnesses used for the coronation of Emperor Alexander II in Moscow in 1856.
The Hong Kong Museum of History is located at 100 Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. It is open from 10am to 6pm on weekdays and from 10am to 7pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays). The standard admission fee for the exhibition is $20. Groups of 20 persons or above can obtain a 30 per cent discount. The concessionary ticket is $10. Free admission on Wednesday is not applicable for this special exhibition.
