Guangdong Music Series launches third-run programmes to showcase legend of Cantonese music

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Guangdong Music Series will be held for a third run in 2015 to showcase the legend of Guangdong music. The programme will include performances featuring Guangdong music ensembles with different backgrounds and experience, a concert of Chaozhou music and a series of talks on the local music culture of Hong Kong.

     Details of the series' programmes are as follows:

Guided Talks on the Vernacular Music Culture in Hong Kong

February 5 and 12 and March 5, 12, 19 and 26 (7.30pm)
AC1, Level 4, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre
Speaker: Professor Yu Siu-wah
Contents: To identify the character of Hong Kong in the fields of music language and culture aspects, the speaker will outline the music culture of Hong Kong from the early 20th century till the 1970s.
Ticket price: $40 per session

Nanyin in Guangdong Music - The Legacy of Dr Ng Wing-mui

February 11 (8pm)
Auditorium, Ko Shan Theatre New Wing
Contents: To pay tribute to Dr Ng Wing-mui's contributions to the Guangdong music tradition of South China, especially on nanyin narrative singing, the concert will feature famous star of Cantonese opera and nanyin artist Yuen Siu-fai and his two bravura pieces "Burning Funerary Goods for His Love" and "King Chu Bidding Farewell to His Concubine". Leung Hoi-lee, an up-and-coming artist in the art of nanyin singing, will perform "The Lone Wild Goose" and "The Third Watch from Nocturnal Lament" in tribute to a mentor, mother-figure and esteemed veteran artist.

Spirit Music Concert

Contents: To take the audience down memory lane, the concert will feature Cantonese operatic arias sung by Chow Chung-nga and veterans such as Tse Tsz-ming and Szeto Siu who made music with Wan Chi-chung in the past.

Guangdong Music Classics by the Hong Kong Cantonese Orchestra

March 6 (8pm)
Theatre, Yau Ma Tei Theatre
Contents: The concert will present a series of memorable works in Guangdong music in various formats, from instrumental solo performance to ensemble and vocal performance. A ground-breaking format will use leiqin solo to simulate the vocal styles of Cantonese opera legends like Hung Sin Nui.

South China Tunes

Auditorium, Ko Shan Theatre New Wing
Contents: Brothers Ko Yun-kuen and Ko Yun-hung, the most sought-after ensemble and percussion leaders in Cantonese opera, will step out of the orchestra pit and perform on stage a different kind of Guangdong music from a bygone era. The Kos will demonstrate the musical expertise they learned from their father, Master Ko Kun, a seasoned percussion leader, and from Master Liu Sum, a famous xiao artist, in Cantonese opera.

Guangdong Music Under the Tree

Contents: The first show will feature the music and songs of Chaozhou led by Lau Fok-kwong, and the other will feature Guangdong music performed by three generations of fine musicians and led by To Wing.

Concert by the Hong Kong Yue Yue Tuan

Contents: This Guangdong music concert will feature the violin as the lead instrument, performed by three fine musicians in the genre: Buk Chan-wing, a National Class One Musician and a highly acclaimed figure in Cantonese operatic music; Luo Qinger, son of Luo Zhen, master of violin in Cantonese opera, famous ensemble leader, leader of the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe and score-writer; and Tsoi Wing-hong, renowned Guangdong music performer and instructor of Guangdong song art in Hong Kong. They will be strongly supported by the Hong Kong Yue Yue Tuan in an exemplary showcase of ensemble sounds of early Guangdong music.

"Echoes of Home - Music of Greater Guangdong" by Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble

Contents: Dr Tong Kin-woon, a renowned narrative-singing artist in nanyin, will premiere the new arrangement of "A Wanderer's Autumn Grief". Rising suona performer Ma Wai-him will perform the famous duet from the Cantonese opera "Romance of the Phoenix Chamber" with the suona and kaqiang (a technique used for suona playing that resonates the reed through throat whistling) imitating the singing style of Cantonese opera. The repertoire will also include "Fire Dragon - Dance" and the world premiere of Chen Ning-chi's latest composition written for five-piece combo and orchestra.

Concert by Yu Qiwei Cantonese Music Ensemble

Theatre, Yau Ma Tei Theatre
Contents: The Yu Qiwei Cantonese Music Ensemble is led by Yu Qiwei. Other players include Wen Chuanying (yehu and zhutiqin), Pan Weiwen (yangqin), Lin Danhong (qinqin) and Wu Guozhong (dizi and xiao). It is adept in interpreting a wide range of works that span the traditional, the innovative and the edgy, thus establishing a type of Guangdong music that blends folk colours with the style of people of letters.
Ticket prices: $150 and $220
