SCS reviews Fire Services passing-out parade (with photos)
**********************************************************

The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Paul Tang, inspected a passing-out parade comprising 10 station officers, 39 firemen and 42 ambulancemen at the Fire Services Training School (FSTS) today (December 19).

Speaking at the parade, Mr Tang commended fire and ambulance personnel for rising to the challenge in providing round-the-clock services to the public.

"There has been great public demand for the emergency services of the Fire Services Department (FSD). Thanks to the strenuous efforts of fire and ambulance personnel in providing emergency rescue, fire-fighting and fire prevention services, the public has a safe place to live and work," he said.

Mr Tang said he was deeply saddened by the death of Principal Fireman Mr Leung Kwok-kei. "The FSD is profoundly grieved at the loss of this brave officer, and the community is saddened by the loss of a civil servant with whole-hearted devotion and strong commitment. I offer my deepest condolences to Mr Leung's family and wish a speedy recovery to the other eight fire personnel injured in the incident. I am confident that FSD personnel will continue to serve with bravery and dedication," he said.

Mr Tang said the FSD had won various awards in the Civil Service Outstanding Service Award Scheme over the years and it had also, for the seventh time in a row, captured the gold prize for the Best Public Image Award. These achievements prove that the FSD's outstanding services have been widely recognised by the public. The FSD also won the gold prize in the Grand Award category at the Customer Service Excellence Awards, hosted by the Hong Kong Association for Customer Service Excellence, for its professional rescue techniques and outstanding services. This is again a recognition of the FSD's quality services, he added.

Mr Tang said training in the emergency services has to advance with the times in view of the rapid developments in society.

"Construction works for the new FSTS at Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O, are under way. The new school will be equipped with a number of advanced simulated training facilities and venues. It will provide basic fire and ambulance training as well training on specialised rescue techniques and fire-fighting knowledge. Fire and ambulance personnel will receive comprehensive training to enhance their professional abilities. The school will also provide in-service training for graduates," Mr Tang said.

He congratulated the graduates on their completion of stringent training and encouraged them to always maintain good conduct and integrity in their respective positions in fulfilling their commitment to serve the community.

The parade was followed by a demonstration of fire-fighting and rescue techniques by the graduates. The graduates have each successfully completed 26 weeks of training and will be posted to various fire stations and ambulance depots.
