The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (December 15) the December 2014 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains two feature articles entitled "Analysis of Hong Kong's Imports of Goods" and "Hong Kong's External Direct Investment Statistics, 2004 to 2013".
"Analysis of Hong Kong's Imports of Goods"
Hong Kong is an externally oriented economy. In 2013, the value of Hong Kong's total exports of goods amounted to $3,559.7 billion, while that of imports of goods was $4,060.7 billion. The ratio of the value of total exports of goods to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 1.67, while that of the value of imports of goods to GDP was 1.91.
Goods consumed locally in Hong Kong are mostly imported. Meanwhile, a large proportion of Hong Kong's imports of goods, apart from being consumed locally, are for subsequent re-exportation. This feature article analyses the performance of Hong Kong's imports of goods in recent years.

"Hong Kong's External Direct Investment Statistics, 2004 to 2013"
Hong Kong is an international financial centre and a regional business hub. It is also a gateway to the vast market of the mainland of China (the Mainland) as well as a platform for facilitating the Mainland enterprises to gain access to the global market. External direct investment (DI) between Hong Kong and the rest of the world, including the Mainland, is very sizable. Analysis of Hong Kong's DI statistics over the past years is useful in understanding the characteristics and trend of DI in Hong Kong.
This feature article presents the salient features of Hong Kong's DI statistics in the past decade.
