The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Ruttonjee and Tang Shiu Kin Hospitals (RHTSK) today (December 4) celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Accident & Emergency Training Centre (AETC) and the opening of a Simulation Suite located in Tang Shiu Kin Hospital. The AETC provides a diversity of emergency medical training courses mainly to front-line staff of the Hospital Authority (HA). Training courses are also provided to other government departments and non-governmental organisations involved in rescue operations and members of the public.

Officiating at the commemoration ceremony today were Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man; the HA Chairman, Professor John Leong; the Chief Executive of the HA, Dr Leung Pak-yin; the Chairman of the Hospital Governing Committee (HGC) of RHTSK, Dr Vitus Leung; HGC Member Mr Richard Tang; the Cluster Chief Executive of Hong Kong East Cluster of HA, Dr Lau Chor-chiu; the Hospital Chief Executive of RHTSK, Dr David Lam; and the Medical Director of the AETC, Dr Kan Pui-gay.

Dr Ko remarked that the opening of the Simulation Suite was one of the many initiatives taken by the HA in cooperating with stakeholders in community to enhance the quality and safety of medical services. The AETC Simulation Suite creates an environment resembling real-life situations for simulation-based training purposes.

Professor Leong said that training helps improve health outcomes and reduces costs due to errors or inefficiencies. The opening of the Simulation Suite is an example of how the HA nourishes its staff in acquiring knowledge and skills in applying the latest technology and processes in daily operations.

Mr Tang said he was pleased to see the modernised facilities and professional services provided by the Centre in supporting health-care teams in meeting the challenges in health-care service delivery. The hospital expressed appreciation to Mr Tang for his generous donation when the Centre was established in 1994 and his recent donation of $3 million to support the continuous development of the AETC.

The AETC is one of the accredited international training centres of the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Emergency Physicians - Emergency Care and Safety Institution. The Centre is also the Hong Kong Chapter of International Trauma Life Support.

The AETC was named "The Most Outstanding AHA Training Centre of the Greater China Region" by the AHA in 2012 and 2013. In June 2014, the Centre was accredited by the AHA to upgrade to the status of International Training Centre.
