********************************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (November 18) that in view of notifications from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5 Avian Influenza on poultry farms in the East Riding of Yorkshire, UK and Oudewater Municipality, the Netherlands respectively, it has banned the import of poultry and poultry products, including poultry eggs, from the two areas with immediate effect for the protection of Hong Kong's public health.

A CFS spokesman said about 15 000 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and 4.8 million poultry eggs from the UK, and 18 000 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and 14.3 million poultry eggs from the Netherlands, were imported into Hong Kong last year.

The CFS has contacted the authorities of the UK and the Netherlands over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on avian influenza outbreaks in the countries. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation. The trade will also be alerted.
