Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra to perform with sanxian performer Zhao Taisheng in December
*********************************************************

The Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra will collaborate with renowned conductor Liu Chiang-pin and sanxian performer Zhao Taisheng for a concert in December.

Under the baton of Liu, the orchestra will perform "Windy City - A Prelude" (Northeast China - A Prelude), "Memory of Taiwan", "An Elegy - to My Beloved Wife" and "Variation of Emotions". The orchestra will also join Zhao to perform "Love in the Courtyard House", "Demon from Heaven" and the world premiere of "Strings and Drum in Harmony".

Liu graduated from Chinese Culture University, where he studied Chinese music. Having been a suona player with the Taipei Chinese Orchestra and toured more than 30 countries worldwide, Liu made the list of Hsinchu's "Top 100 Artists" in 2010. He is currently the music director and conductor of the Hsinchu Youth Chinese Orchestra and the Hsinchu City Youth Chinese Orchestra, having led the orchestras on widely acclaimed tours to Japan and the Mainland.

Zhao Taisheng graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in 1988. He was honoured by the Government of Beijing Municipality for his meritorious achievements in culture, and was also part of a Beijing delegation to Scandinavia. In 1998, Zhao was named one of the "Ten best performers of Beijing". His sanxian solo performance of "Ceding Xuzhou" at the closing ceremony of the 2nd China Peking Opera Art Festival in the same year caused a sensation. In 2003, as one of the Chinese outstanding young persons, Zhao was invited by the Korean President to tour Korea.

Founded in 1962, the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra is one of the oldest Chinese orchestras in Hong Kong. The orchestra is dedicated to introducing a wide range of Chinese folk music to the public, as well as providing training and performance opportunities to local young musicians. The orchestra has collaborated with an array of local and Mainland conductors and musicians, and its performances have received critical acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

The concert by the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be staged at 4pm on December 14 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets priced at $100, $120 and $140 are now available at URBTIX.
