Free exhibition at Kowloon Park to introduce plants of rose family (with photos)
************************************************************

To arouse public interest in horticulture and to enhance awareness of greening, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold a horticulture education exhibition entitled "Plants of Rosaceae" on November 8 and 9 (Saturday and Sunday) from 10am to 4pm at the Arcade of Kowloon Park. Admission is free.

Rosaceae, or the rose family, comprises about 90 genera with more than 3 000 species, encompassing herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees. Most species are deciduous, while some are evergreen. Rosaceae species commonly found in Hong Kong include rose, peach, mume, bell-flower cherry and loquat.

Plants of the rose family are useful in many ways. Fruits like peach and loquat can be eaten fresh. Rose can be made into different food products such as rose wine and rose tea. Loquat leaf can be made into a medicinal syrup while the fruit of mume can regulate the flow of qi and be used as a herbal medicine. In addition, essential oil can be extracted from rose petals by distillation to produce fragrance. Roses can also be used as decorations.

In traditional Chinese culture, the peach is also known as "the divine fruit", a symbol of longevity. Roses of different colours carry different meanings. For example, the red rose symbolises beauty and love.

Descriptive display panels will enable members of the public to learn more about the growth habits and characteristics of common Rosaceae species. They will also introduce the propagation methods, uses in daily life and symbolic meanings.

Game stalls will be open during the exhibition at the Kowloon Park Arcade. Visitors will also be able to share the fun of pot planting under the guidance of horticulture instructors.

Talks in Cantonese entitled "Introduction to Rosaceae" and "Introduction to roses and their uses" will be held at the Secondary Hall of Kowloon Park Sports Centre. Admission tickets are required.
