Male sentenced for theft

     A 70-year-old Chinese man was sentenced to 34 months and 13 days・ imprisonment for 40 counts of theft at the District Court today (September 17).

     The court heard that when the defendant was employed as a financial controller in a Hong Kong registered company between February 1996 and January 1999, he dishonestly misappropriated the company・s funds of over HK$7 million in total, purportedly for the disbursement of employees・ taxes or the company・s expenses, by exaggerating the amounts payable or making repeat debits from same account, and depositing the stolen amount into his personal bank account or by cash cheque withdrawals.  Following the defendant・s departure from the company, the company revealed the incident and reported it to Police in March 1999.

     Following thorough investigations by officers of the Commercial Crime Bureau, the defendant was successfully extradited from Canada in January 2014. He was then arrested and charged with 40 counts of theft. The defendant was convicted for all charges at the District Court on 4 August this year and was sentenced today.
