Multimedia performance "1984-A Cinematic Opera" to shuttle between film and the actual world
***********************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's "Boundless Multimedia Series" will stage the multimedia performance "1984-A Cinematic Opera" in October. Alternating between the visual forms of film and opera, audiences will experience imagery moving from George Orwell's "1984" to the actual world of 2014.

The director is local multimedia artist Nerve (Steve Hui), who will collaborate with veteran artists from various fields in producing this presentation. During the performance, the theatre may become a cinema while the cinema may become the backdrop for an opera. A telescreen can meanwhile be viewed as both a medium of transmission and the mirror of surveillance. Time and space are bounded by the stage and a telescreen in this performance, and the roles will shuttle between live presence and images, leaping between 1984 and 2014 and mourning a disappearing language with a renewed singing voice.

A versatile artist, Nerve is a composer, performer, DJ, curator and educator. He is also known for his work in contemporary and electronic music, sound art, film soundtracks and multimedia theatre.

"1984-A Cinematic Opera" will be staged at 8pm on October 10 and 11 (Friday and Saturday) and at 5pm on October 12 (Sunday) at Multi-media Theatre of the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity. Tickets priced at $200 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the group booking package while discounts of up to 15 per cent are available for the "Boundless Multimedia" Series packages. Please refer to the series brochure and individual programme leaflets for details.
