LCSD swimming facilities remain open in general
***********************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) expressed regret over the strike by some lifeguards, which resulted in the temporary closure of certain swimming pools and beaches due to insufficient lifeguards being on duty today (September 9). The LCSD again apologised for any inconvenience caused to members of the public. With more than 60 per cent of the lifeguard colleagues remaining steadfast in performing duties, and with assistance from the Hong Kong Life Saving Society, venue-based lifeguard clubs and the Auxiliary Medical Service, most of the swimming pools and beaches of the LCSD remained open today, an LCSD spokesman said.

Among the 43 swimming pools and 38 beaches with lifesaving services managed by the LCSD, 34 swimming pools remained fully or partially opened while 25 beaches were in full operation. All water sports centres were also in full operation today. Meanwhile, nine swimming pools were closed for the full day or during some of the day and 13 beaches had their lifesaving services suspended.

The spokesman thanked 930 lifeguard colleagues who remained steadfast in performing duties as well as over 200 honorary lifeguards and Auxiliary Medical Service first aiders for rendering professional services today. He called on lifeguard colleagues on strike to return to their posts as soon as possible to continue their professional services.

Meanwhile, the LCSD will continue its close dialogue with the unions, hoping to work together to explore and implement feasible measures in a practicable and rational manner and to seek consensus.
