Local authors to discuss smarter living and sustainability in "Meet-the-Authors 2014"
***********************************************************

Anyone can enjoy the natural beauty of the sky and the sea as well as trees and flowers, yet in modern times many have forgotten to cherish nature and the earth's resources. Several writers will share their experiences and discuss ways to strive for a sustainable future through smart living during the "Meet-the-Authors 2014" programme.

Organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this year's "Meet-the-Authors" programme will feature three series of talks under the theme "A Smarter Life ĦE A Sustainable Future". The series are entitled "Know Our Earth, Enjoy Our Nature", "Relaxed Living, Simple Living" and "Eye on the World, Read for Your Life" with nine talks to be held from September to November. Young people and other interested parties are welcome to attend. The talks will be conducted in Cantonese and admission is free.

The speakers of the nine talks are the Chairman of the Friends of the Country Parks, Professor Jim Chi-yung; author and installation artist Ms Ho See-man; author on popular science Dr Lee Wai-choi; noted academic researcher on red tide in Hong Kong Professor Ho Kin-chung; author on the natural environment and ecology Mr Dickson Wong; member of environmental groups Mr Chu Hon-keung; co-founder of the social enterprise Green Monday Mr David Yeung; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Amputees Sport Association, Mr Fung Kam-hung; and author and anchorman Mr Allan Au.

The beauty of nature can be seen everywhere. In the series entitled "Know Our Earth, Enjoy Our Nature", Professor Jim Chi-yung will discuss on September 13 the characteristics and cultural meaning of banyan trees, as well as the contributions of trees and ways to cherish valuable natural resources. On October 18, Ms Ho See-man will share with audiences the idea of "animal activism" and ways to avoid harming animals.

Resources are being over-consumed as demand from people continues to rise. On October 25, Dr Lee Wai-choi will discuss how to protect natural resources in order to sustain the existence of human beings and the earth's resources. As water is the origin of life, Professor Ho Kin-chung will share on November 15 the importance of water resources and water quality in the modern world. Mr Dickson Wong, an enthusiast on living creatures from birds to sea animals, will discuss on November 22 how to cherish the precious natural resources in Hong Kong.

Living a simple life can be enjoyable. In the series entitled "Relaxed Living, Simple Living", two writers will review the modern lifestyle and discuss the way to live life to the fullest, yet in a simple way. Mr Chu Hon-keung, who actively promotes environmental protection, will share on October 4 various ways of living simply instead of following a continuous lifestyle of buying and changing. On October 11, Mr David Yeung will discuss spiritual management to inspire a positive attitude for working happily.

Life is a continuous journey of learning. Reading not only enhances knowledge but nourishes the heart. In the series entitled "Eye on the World, Read for Your Life", two writers will share their touching stories with audiences. Mr Fung Kam-hung, who lost part of his leg in an accident and was the first person with disabilities to complete Oxfam Trailwalker, will share on October 25 his personal experience of how positive thinking in daily life can help one to face difficulties and challenges easily.
