Grants approved for earthquake and flood victims on the Mainland
********************************************************

The Government has accepted the advice of the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee and approved two grants from the Disaster Relief Fund totalling $9.387 million to two agencies for providing relief to earthquake victims in Yunnan Province on the Mainland.

Announcing the grants today (August 20), a government spokesman said that the earthquake disaster in Yunnan earlier this month had resulted in heavy casualties and extensive damage. Many victims are in dire need of emergency relief to tide them over the present difficulties. The Committee hopes the two grants dedicated for providing relief to the earthquake victims in Yunnan - one of $6.317 million to Amity Foundation, Hong Kong and one of $3.07 million to World Vision Hong Kong - would facilitate the provision of timely relief to the victims and help them to restore their normal life.

Also on the advice of the Committee, the Government approved one grant of $4.5 million to World Vision Hong Kong and one of $1.015 million to Oxfam Hong Kong for the provision of relief to the flood victims in the southern Mainland including Hunan, Guizhou and Guangxi Provinces.

"To ensure that the money would be used for the designated purposes, the relief agencies would be asked to submit evaluation reports and audited accounts on the use of the grants after the relief projects have been completed," the spokesman said.
