Public Policy Research Funding Scheme invites research proposals
*******************************************************

The Central Policy Unit (CPU) today (August 15) announced that the Public Policy Research (PPR) Funding Scheme will include "Bioethics", "External Economy: Complementing the National 'Go Global' Strategy" and "Air Quality Monitoring" as new indicative research areas.  Eligible parties are invited to make applications in these areas.

Bioethics

The rapid development and wide application of life science in areas such as medicine and health have contributed to the well-being of mankind, but also given rise to ethical, legal and social implications and posed challenges to public health policy and scientific research development in Hong Kong.  The CPU encourages academics and researchers to explore from different angles the impact of life science development on society and the relationship between bioethics and public policies in Hong Kong.

External Economy: Complementing the National "Go Global" Strategy

As the Mainland has quickened its pace in going global against the background of the new development of economic globalisation, both state-owned and private enterprises, in the process of investment and operation, should make use of their respective competitive advantages, complement and co-operate with each other, and go global jointly with a view to exploring international markets and developing the external economy.  The CPU encourages academics and researchers to explore the overseas development potential of enterprises with a government background and how state-owned and private enterprises can integrate their strength under the national strategy of going global.

Air Quality Monitoring

Air quality in Hong Kong has always been a public concern.  This issue relates not only to public health and quality of life but also the long-term development of Hong Kong.  The Mainland and neighbouring areas also attach importance to this issue.  The CPU encourages academics and researchers to explore cross-boundary co-operation on air quality monitoring and measures to improve air quality.

Research proposals on the above three new areas from tertiary institutions and think tanks are welcome.

Details of the PPR Funding Scheme, including eligibility criteria, indicative research areas, composition of the Assessment Panel and other information can be found on the CPU website (www.cpu.gov.hk).  Applicants should complete the specified application form and submit it to the CPU, preferably by email (email: ppr@cpu.gov.hk).
