FS starts visit to Singapore (with photos)

     The Financial Secretary, Mr John C Tsang, today (July 31) started his visit to Singapore to strengthen economic and trade ties between Hong Kong and Singapore.

     Mr Tsang started the day with a breakfast meeting with the Association of Banks in Singapore. Mr Tsang and the other attendees exchanged views on the global economy, compliance requirements for the banking sector, and opportunities in the growing Renminbi business.

     Mr Tsang then met with Singapore's Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Lim Hng Kiang, and attended a briefing by the Economic Development Board and the International Enterprise Singapore, both agencies under the Ministry for Trade and Industry. Mr Tsang was updated on the latest business environment in Singapore. Both sides discussed opportunities for collaboration between the two places.

     Mr Tsang paid a courtesy call on the Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, Mr Duan Jielong, before a lunch with representatives of key chambers in Singapore.

     In the afternoon, Mr Tsang visited Lucasfilm, one of the world's leading animation and special effects production houses.

     At a later meeting with the Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Mr Ravi Menon, the two sides had an in-depth exchange on a wide range of regulatory issues common to the two places.

     Mr Tsang also attended a gathering with members of the Hong Kong community and officiated at the launching of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Internship for University Students of Hong Kong Scheme.

     Before concluding the first day of his visit, Mr Tsang had dinner with Singapore entrepreneurs in the field of innovation and technology.

     Mr Tsang will attend the opening of the 7th ASEAN and Asia Forum and meet a number of top Singaporean officials tomorrow (August 1) before returning to Hong Kong in the evening.
