The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, today (July 30) started his two-day visit to Taipei and Taichung to promote exchange and co-operation in tourism between Hong Kong and Taiwan. He was accompanied by the Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Philip Yung.
In his capacity as the Vice-Chairperson of the Hong Kong-Taiwan Economic and Cultural Co-operation and Promotion Council during this visit, Mr So met the head of the tourism authorities in Taiwan, Mr David W J Hsieh, in Taipei to discuss the latest tourism developments in both places.
Mr So arrived Taichung in the afternoon to attend a networking function between tourism trade partners from Hong Kong and Taiwan organised by the Taiwan office of the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
Speaking at the networking function, Mr So noted that Taiwan is Hong Kong's second largest visitor source market, and in return Taiwan is a very popular tourist destination for Hong Kong people.
Mr So said that the beautiful scenery and night markets of Taiwan, as well as the cosmopolitan features and rich event calendar of Hong Kong, created strong complementarity between the two places in developing "multi-destination" itineraries. He said he hoped today's networking function could facilitate future co-operation between the travel trade in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Tomorrow (July 31) morning, Mr So will give a keynote speech on the directions and promotion strategies for developing Hong Kong tourism at the 2014 Hong Kong-Taichung Intercity Forum, which is co-organised by the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office (Taiwan) and the Taichung City Government.
Mr So and the travel trade representatives from Hong Kong will also visit a few tourist attractions in Taichung.
Mr So will return to Hong Kong in the late evening tomorrow.
