Multimedia artists from Hong Kong and Japan will stage three cutting-edge programmes in the "Boundless Multimedia Series", to be presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, from mid-September to early November.
SIRO-A from Japan will offer an interactive multimedia physical theatre programme entitled "SIRO-A Spectacle Projection Mapping Show". Six members will interact with technology through dance, comedy, mime and shadow-puppetry. The show will take the audience to a dreamlike virtual world. Spectacular projection mapping produced by SIRO-A as well as lighting animation, stunning laser effects and pulsating electro beats will feature in several scenes with breathtaking optical illusions, sound and light, creating a feast for the senses.
Local multimedia artist Nerve will serve as director and collaborate with veteran artists from various fields of the arts for "1984 - A Cinematic Opera". The production will present the idea of "Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2=4". In the performance, the theatre can become a cinema, a cinema can become the backdrop of an opera. A telescreen can meanwhile be viewed as both a medium of transmission and the mirror of surveillance. Time and space are bounded by the stage and a telescreen in this performance, and the roles will shuttle between live presence and images, leaping between 1984 and 2014 and mourning a disappearing language with a renewed singing voice.
Local performing group the box is formed by Kung Chi-shing and Peter Suart. Major productions have been called "sides" and have investigated the relationship between music, strong visual effects and dramatic elements. The productions are always closely related to classical literature. The music theatre work "the world was made on a sunday" (side 15) by the box talks about Vladimir Nabokov, Dmitri Shostakovich and Josef Stalin. By looking at these three men and in connection with Nabokov's autobiography, the performance will explore the relationship of childhood memories, butterflies, chess and power with art through music, speech and theatrical gesture.
