Day Camp for Geotechnical Engineers of Tomorrow improves students' awareness of slope safety (with photo)
*********************************************************

The Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) today (July 5) held the Day Camp for Geotechnical Engineers of Tomorrow, at which over 120 junior secondary school students from 17 schools learned about basic geotechnical engineering, slope safety and the roles and duties of geotechnical engineers through a series of lectures, experiments and a competition.

Speaking at the award presentation ceremony for the day camp's competition, the Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Mr Hon Chi-keung, said, "The Geotechnical Engineering Office has developed a comprehensive and highly regarded slope safety system in phases since its establishment in 1977. Under the system, the landslide risk from man-made slopes has been reduced by 75 per cent. Nevertheless, the adverse effect of extreme rainfall on slope stability in Hong Kong cannot be underestimated. Members of the public should always stay vigilant against landslide risk."

One of the highlights of the day camp involved 28 teams of students competing to build the tallest sand castle. Guests including the Head of the Geotechnical Engineering Office, Mr Wong Hok-ning; Legislative Council Members Mr Ip Kin-yuen and Dr Lo Wai-kwok; and the President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Mr Victor Cheung, took part in a sand block building demonstration match to encourage the students.

Organised by the Geotechnical Engineering Office of the CEDD in collaboration with the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, the day camp is one of the Government's educational activities for the promotion of slope safety.
