Appointment of Director of Fire Services (with photo)

     The Government announced today (June 16) that Mr Lai Man-hin, Deputy Director of Fire Services, will succeed Mr Andy Chan Chor-kam as Director of Fire Services with effect from June 24, 2014. Mr Chan will proceed on pre-retirement leave on the same day after 37 years of service with the Government.

     Commenting on Mr Lai's appointment, Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Paul Tang, said, "Mr Lai has proven leadership and administrative skills, profound professional knowledge and extensive operational experience. I am confident that he will be able to lead the Fire Services Department to meet the challenges ahead and continue to deliver quality service to the community."

     On the retirement of Mr Chan, Mr Tang said, "Mr Chan has served with commitment in the Civil Service throughout the years. As the Director of Fire Services, Mr Chan has made sustained efforts in enhancing fire fighting and rescue capabilities of the Fire Services Department, and in promoting fire safety in the community as well as providing efficient emergency ambulance services to the public. We sincerely wish him a happy retirement."

     Brief biographical notes on the two officers are set out below:

Mr Andy Chan Chor-kam

     Aged 56, Mr Chan joined the Government as an Assistant Station Officer in April 1977. He was promoted to Deputy Chief Fire Officer in January 2003, to Chief Fire Officer in December 2005 and to Deputy Director of Fire Services in June 2008. He has been Director of Fire Services since October 2011.

Mr Lai Man-hin
--------------

     Aged 54, Mr Lai joined the Government as an Assistant Station Officer in June 1979. He was promoted to Deputy Chief Fire Officer in December 2004, to Chief Fire Officer in March 2007 and to Deputy Director of Fire Services in April 2012.
