***********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The 2014 internship programme organised by the Legislative Council Secretariat for local tertiary students commenced today (June 3).

"The Secretariat is pleased to provide students with the training opportunities to gain hands-on experience in the Secretariat's support services for the Legislative Council (LegCo) and enable them to better understand the functions and operation of LegCo," the Secretary General of the LegCo Secretariat, Mr Kenneth Chen, said.

A total of 13 undergraduate students and six sub-degree students were nominated by their respective tertiary institutions to participate in the internship programme. The students gathered at an orientation session today.

"I am very excited to be an intern of the Secretariat and be able to learn more about the work of LegCo from the professional team of the Secretariat. I am also looking forward to the Meeting with President and Members sessions, which is part of the internship programme," a student said after the orientation session.

During the internship from June 3 to July 18, 2014, the students will be attached to various divisions of the Secretariat to closely follow the day-to-day work of the Secretariat. In addition, they will observe meetings of LegCo and its committees, meet with the President and Members of LegCo, and take part in a mock Council debate playing the role of Members in the passage of a mock bill.

The internship programme, which will be held annually by the Secretariat during the summer vacation of students, was launched in 2013.
