Person responsible for workplace fined and sentenced to imprisonment for violation of safety rules
********************************************************

A person responsible for a workplace was fined $ 20,000 and sentenced to one month imprisonment, suspended for two years, at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts today (May 30) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Regulation. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department (LD). The LD welcomes the court sentence.

The case involved an inspection that was carried out on October 31 last year by an Occupational Safety Officer of the LD in Yau Tong. All the three means of escape from the warehouse of a logistic company were found totally obstructed. The person responsible for the workplace failed to ensure that all means of escape from the workplace were kept free from obstruction as required under the OSH Regulation.

" Employers should comply with the OSH Ordinance and the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance to ensure the safety and health at work of their employees. The LD does not tolerate any ignorance of employees' OSH and spares no efforts in prosecuting employers who defy the law," a spokesperson for the LD said.

The LD will continue to safeguard the OSH of employees in Hong Kong. The spokesperson urged all employees who find omission of safety measures at their workplace should promptly report to the LD to protect their safety and health at work.
