The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Paul Tang, today (May 23) attended a ceremony to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the launch of national studies programmes organised by Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Other guests attending the ceremony included the State Councillor, Mr Yang Jiechi; the President of Tsinghua University, Professor Chen Jining; officials from the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council; and representatives of other Mainland institutions that provide national studies programmes.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tang said that the Civil Service Bureau (CSB) has been working closely with Tsinghua University and other Mainland institutions to update and improve the programmes provided to Hong Kong civil servants. He added that over the years these comprehensive programmes have been highly appreciated by participants, and expressed his gratitude to Tsinghua University and other Mainland institutions for their continuous support for national studies programmes.

The CSB started organising Tsinghua University National Studies Programmes in co-operation with Tsinghua University in 1993. Since then, the CSB has joined with other Mainland institutions including the Chinese Academy of Governance, Peking University, the China Foreign Affairs University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University and Jinan University in organising a series of training programmes for senior and mid-level civil servants to enhance their understanding of political, social, economic, cultural and legal developments on the Mainland. At present, a yearly average of about 700 Hong Kong civil servants participate in these various national studies programmes on the Mainland.

Following his visit, Mr Tang will return to Hong Kong this afternoon.
