"Legends of the Giant Dinosaurs" exhibition, the largest of its type ever held in Hong Kong, came to a close at 7pm today (April 9). The five-month exhibition was a great success, attracting over 770 000 visitors.
As well as breaking all attendance records for thematic exhibitions held at the Hong Kong Science Museum, the exhibition was also the most popular thematic exhibition held by any museum of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).
A spokesman for the LCSD said, "The exhibition recorded a daily average of over 5 900 visitors and more than 13 000 daily visitors at its peak. We are grateful for the public support that made this exhibition such a huge success.
"The exhibition drew on international participation from 13 Mainland and overseas institutes. Featuring a rich variety of content including huge exhibits, the museum had to make room for a 2 500 square metre gallery for the display of more than 190 items," the spokesman said.
"Half of the exhibit highlights were fossilised dinosaurs including skeletons, skulls, vertebrae, feathered dinosaurs and eggs. Others included life-size dinosaur skeleton models, robotic dinosaurs and interactive exhibits."
A group of large robotic dinosaurs were also put on display outside the museum. The most spectacular was a 30m-long, 10m-high Daxiatitan binglingi. With a swaying head and tail, this gigantic robotic dinosaur could even roar. This huge replica and its robotic companions, two Pterosaurs and a family of three Stegosauruses, stood in the museum's piazzas to greet visitors to the exhibition.
To enhance the educational and interactive appeal of the exhibition, the museum employed state-of-art technology for interactive exhibits such as object recognition and real-time 3D rendering. Fun-filled computer games and interactive exhibits were also been designed and produced.
Speaking about these specially designed interactive tools, the spokesman added, "The Jurassic World mobile app designed by an augmented reality technique to enable audiences to view the dinosaurs in action has just received the Best Mobile Apps (Mobile Information) Gold Award at the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2014."
The exhibition, which opened on November 8 last year, was presented by the LCSD and organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum. It was solely sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust and is one of three exhibitions in the 2013 Hong Kong Jockey Club Series.
