EPD sets up 128 new glass bottle collection points (with photos)
*********************************************************

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has continued to expand the glass bottle recycling network and in the first quarter of this year an additional 128 glass bottle collection points were set up in different housing estates, boosting the total number to 449.

The Government has actively prepared for the implementation of the Producer Responsibility Scheme on Glass Beverage Bottles by increasing the size of the recycling network and strengthening public education through the Recycle Clean programme.

A spokesman for the EPD today (April 6) said, "The newly set up collection points will enhance public participation in glass bottle recycling. Additionally people are reminded that glass bottles used for beverages, food or sauces should be cleaned before being placed in the glass bottle collection bins to assist the subsequent recycling work."

Waste glass bottles collected from EPD collection points will be delivered to recognised recyclers for processing into glass sand for the production of eco-pavers or use as construction materials in public works, thus turning waste glass into a useful resource and helping to alleviate the pressure on landfills.

The EPD will continue to expand the glass bottle recycling network with a view to achieving 1,000 collection points in residential areas by end of this year. Housing estates interested in joining the glass bottle recycling network can contact the EPD at 2838 3111 or by e-mail at enquiry@epd.gov.hk.
