Judicial appointment

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Judiciary today (April 1) announced the appointment of Mr Tam Sze-lok as District Judge. The appointment will take effect from April 2, 2014.

     The appointment was made by the Chief Executive on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission.

     Further judicial appointment will be announced in due course.

     As Mr Tam was the Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions in the Department of Justice prior to the appointment, he will not, for six months after joining the Judiciary, preside over criminal trials.

     The biographical note of Mr Tam is as follows:

     Mr Tam was born in Hong Kong in 1964. He obtained LL.B., P.C.LL. and Master of Public Administration from the University of Hong Kong in 1990, 1991 and 2013 respectively. He was admitted as a Solicitor in Hong Kong in 1993. He joined the then Legal Department as Crown Counsel in 1994. He was appointed Senior Government Counsel in the Department of Justice in 1997 and was promoted to Assistant Principal Government Counsel and Deputy Principal Government Counsel in 2011 and 2013 respectively. He took up the post of Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions in 2013.
