TAC accepts STH's invitation to conduct study on road traffic congestion
******************************************************

The Transport Advisory Committee (TAC) today (March 25) welcomed and accepted the invitation by the Secretary for Transport and Housing (STH), Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, to conduct a study on road traffic congestion in Hong Kong.

"The TAC welcomes the invitation and will explore different measures to contain traffic congestion in Hong Kong. I am confident that with the expertise of my fellow TAC members, we will put forward recommendations that are practicable," the TAC Chairman, Mr Larry Kwok, said.

The study will identify various factors contributing to road congestion in Hong Kong and suggest to the Government some practicable measures to tackle the problem. The TAC will submit a report to the STH in December 2014.

"The fact that the STH has invited the TAC to conduct the study demonstrates that the Government accords importance to tackling the road congestion problem. The TAC will shortly set up a dedicated working group to conduct the study. The first meeting is expected to be held in April," Mr Kwok added.

TAC Members were also briefed by the Highways Department (HyD) on the public lighting system in Hong Kong.

"Members welcome the Administration's efforts in exploring different means to reduce energy consumption of the public lighting system and agree that HyD should continue to optimise the design standards of the public lighting system and the related operation and maintenance work in order to continue to provide the community with reliable, safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly public lighting," Mr Kwok said.
