STH inspects two public rental housing blocks to be completed shortly in Kwai Chung (with photos)
****************************************************

The Secretary for Transport and Housing, Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, today (March 10) visited two public rental housing blocks to be completed shortly, namely Luen Yat House and Luen Yuet House, at Kwai Shing Circuit, Kwai Chung.

The two blocks, 39 storeys and 41 storeys high respectively, are within the boundary of Kwai Luen Estate. They will be completed next month and will provide more than 1,500 flats for a population intake of about 4,200 tenants by mid-2014. There will be a variety of flat mixes to meet the needs of families of different sizes.

Kwai Luen Estate comprises two platforms with a level difference of 24 metres. To provide for a convenient pedestrian link between Kwai Luen Road and Kwai Shing Circuit with universal accessibility, the Hong Kong Housing Authority is also building a lift tower and a link bridge.

A community garden at the upper platform will also be completed. Facilities like sitting-out areas, fitness equipment, a play area, a basketball court, a performance stage, a public toilet and a community farm will be provided. The community garden will serve as an urban hub for the local residents in the neighbourhood.

There will be a reclaimed rainwater system and a plant waste recycle bin inside the community garden. The rainwater gathered will be used to water plants while the plants decomposed in the recycle bin will be used as fertiliser; other than being of practical use, this will help promote awareness of environmental protection.

Before inspecting the site, Professor Cheung visited Lai King Estate, where he had a tea gathering with members of the Estate Management Advisory Committee to listen to their views on estate management. He also visited the South Kwai Chung Service Centre in Lai King Estate and chatted with the elderly volunteers and visited the nurse clinic there.
