To enable members of the public to obtain information more easily on waste reduction and recycling, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) today (March 10) launched "Waste Less", a mobile application that can be installed for free.
The primary function of "Waste Less" is to provide information on the locations of the recyclable collection points in public places all over Hong Kong. It also displays the location of the user and the nearby collection points in the form of a map on the mobile device, and also shows photographs of the recycling points, their detailed addresses, the types of recyclables to be collected and more. A built-in search engine also assists users to take recyclables to the most suitable collection points in the vicinity.
This first version of "Waste Less" carries a database covering about 4 000 information items on the waste separation bins provided and managed by various government departments as well as BBQ fork collection points in countryside areas. The database will be continuously updated and expanded to include more collection points for different kinds of recyclables.
At the same time, the EPD will make use of the "Waste Less" platform to provide the latest news and useful knowledge about waste reduction and recycling, and update the information regularly. In addition, an interactive feature in "Waste Less" titled "My Recycling Diary" allows users to record the types and quantities of recyclables that they have recovered every day. Users may also easily share "Waste Less" and its message with their friends.
Members of the public are welcome to install and use "Waste Less", which is available for downloading from the following platforms for free:
