The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Environmental Affairs departed for Denmark today (March 6, Copenhagen time) to continue the duty visit in Europe. During the visit in the Netherlands yesterday (March 5, Amsterdam time), the delegation studied the country's experience in planning and operating thermal waste treatment facilities.

The delegation visited the Afval Energie Bedrijf (AEB) Waste Fired Power Plant in Amsterdam to understand the operation and application of moving gate technology.  It is the largest renewable energy plant in Amsterdam and the world's largest waste-to-energy plant. AEB has an energy-from-waste power station with an energy efficiency of 30%. The power station produces energy as well as heat and has the highest efficiency among all energy-from-waste facilities in the Netherlands.

Members of the delegation then attended a luncheon hosted by the Vice Mayor of Amsterdam, Ms Carolien Gehrels. In the afternoon, the delegation had a meeting with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment of the Netherlands, Mr Siebe Riedstra, and other experts to discuss the Country's national waste management policy.

The delegation departed for Copenhagen, Denmark today. Members of the delegation will meet with the Minister of the Environment of Denmark and the Technical and Environmental Mayor of Copenhagen, and will have a discussion on waste management with the Ministry of the Environment of Denmark and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. They will also receive a briefing on the Amager Bakke waste-to-energy plant project and visit the Roskilde waste-to-energy plant.
