Hong Kong Museum of Art stages largest exhibition of works by Ju Ming (with photos)
***********************************************************

"Ju Ming - Sculpting the Living World", the largest exhibition of works by the world-famous Chinese artist Ju Ming ever held in Hong Kong, will open to the public at the Hong Kong Museum of Art tomorrow (February 28).

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition today (February 27), the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Raymond Young, said that the internationally renowned sculptor Ju Ming has spent decades creating artworks. Ju has held many exhibitions in major cities in Asia, Europe and the United States, with his "Taichi Series" becoming his most famous set of works and winning him wide acclaim.

Mr Young said Ju has never become complacent despite his achievements and continues to pursue innovation by applying his belief that "art is practice". His perseverance and tireless spirit is admirable, Mr Young said. The "Living World Series" is one of Ju's most significant series of works, having taken more than 30 years to develop. These sculptures not only demonstrate the artist's exquisite craftsmanship, but also reflect his keen sense of observation and genuine emotion towards the vicissitudes of life.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony included Mr Ju; the Vice-Chancellor and President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Joseph Sung; the Chairman of the Friends of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Mrs Nancy Lee; the Chairman of the Art Museum Advisory Panel, Mr Vincent Lo; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mrs Betty Fung; the Director of the Juming Museum, Mr Wu Shun-ling; and the Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Miss Eve Tam.

The exhibition features 120 sets of works from the "Living World Series", made with materials including wood, ceramics, stone, bronze and stainless steel. The sculptures were created based on people's daily life and reflect different roles in family and society. Among the exhibits are depictions of elderly people spending time playing with their grandchildren, the anxious look of people in a queue, the brave expressions of soldiers, the carefree attitude of people practising tai chi, the beautiful movement of dancers and the elegance of swimmers.

The exhibition also features two of Ju's recent major breakthrough pieces, "Living World Series - Imprisonment" and "Cube". These two sets of creative works are beautifully crafted and question life from a philosophical point of view.

Apart from showing sculptures in the two exhibition galleries, the exhibition is displaying larger sculptures in the space around the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the newly completed Art Square at Salisbury Garden with an aim of sharing Ju's creations with the people.

The exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Juming Museum and organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Juming Museum. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust is sponsoring the art appreciation programme and the Friends of the Hong Kong Museum of Art is sponsoring the related international symposium. The exhibition will run until June 15.

To tie in with the exhibition, the Hong Kong Museum of Art will hold "Modeling Ju Ming - Ju Ming International Symposium" on March 1 to explore the topic of "Re-considering Ju Ming with a globalised mindset" in relation to his "Living World Series". Ju and scholars from the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and overseas have been invited to give speeches. The symposium will be conducted in Cantonese, Putonghua and English. Simultaneous interpretation will be available. Admission is free. Seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Standard admission tickets for this exhibition are priced at $20 (Friday to Tuesday) and $10 (Wednesday only). Full-time students, senior citizens and people with disabilities can enjoy concession fees, which are $10 (Friday to Tuesday) and $5 (Wednesday only). A 30 per cent discount is available to groups of 20 persons or more. Free admission on Wednesday and the department's Weekly Pass are not applicable for this special exhibition.
