Cold spell in February
**********************

An intense winter monsoon has brought persistently low temperatures and gloomy weather to Hong Kong in the past few days. With the replenishment of the winter monsoon to the south China coast today (February 13), the local weather will remain cold in the next couple of days. Senior citizens and persons with chronic medical conditions should continue to take steps to protect themselves against the potential health impact caused by low temperatures.

Looking back, it is not uncommon to have very cold weather in Hong Kong. Based on climatological information from 1981 to 2010 there is about one very cold day every two years. Please refer to the Appendix for the years with the highest number of very cold days.

The winter monsoon is expected to moderate early next week when temperatures over the coastal areas will rise significantly.
