Peach Blossom Tree Recycling Campaign 2014 promotes waste recovery and recycling (with photos)
**********************************************************

During the Lunar New Year (LNY), many people and organisations display peach blossom trees to celebrate the festive season. This year, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association (HKEPA) have jointly organised the Peach Blossom Tree Recycling Campaign following the success of a similar recycling campaign last year, to encourage members of the public to recycle festive items and thereby alleviate the pressure on landfills.

This year's Peach Blossom Tree Recycling Campaign will be expanded to cover a network of 50 collection points for individuals and households in all the districts of the territory. During the two weekends after the LNY holidays, i.e. February 8 to 9 and February 15 to 16, members of the public can deliver the peach blossom trees they want to dispose of at the refuse transfer stations (RTSs) of the EPD or refuse collection points (RCPs) designated by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in each district. All the peach blossom trees collected will then be delivered to the waste wood recycler, Hong Kong Hung Wai Wooden Board Company, in the EcoPark, Tuen Mun for recycling into wood fuel pellets (a useful type of renewable energy) and composting materials.

In this campaign only peach blossom trees will be collected for recycling. Members of the public may contact other recycling organisations for the recycling of pots of flowers and tangerines. Please visit the Hong Kong Waste Reduction Website at www.wastereduction.gov.hk for details.

The designated collection points will only receive peach blossom trees from members of the public this year. As was the practice last year, department stores, shopping centres, commercial and industrial organisations, buildings, property management companies of housing estates, owners' corporations and cleaning companies should directly deliver the collected peach blossom trees to the EcoPark for recycling.

Information about the locations and opening hours of the designated collection points can be obtained via the websites of EcoPark (www.ecopark.com.hk) and HKEPA (www.hkepa.org), and the enquiry hotlines at 2496 7633 / 2404 9188.

The EPD also encourages members of the public to participate in waste reduction and recycling during the festive celebrations. For information on LNY waste reduction and recycling tips as well as recycling outlets for items such as festive food, please visit the Hong Kong Waste Reduction Website.

Waste recovery and recycling requires the participation of whole community. The EPD cordially invites everyone to partake in the Peach Blossom Tree Recycling Campaign and other recycling programmes. Let's work together to "Use less, waste less".
